Every luxury brand has a soul a “why” that fuels every stroke of the pen. My journey into the world of professional artistry didn’t start in a boardroom or a design studio; it started at a kitchen table.
The Heritage: Roots in Ink and Love
The foundation of my business was laid long before I moved to the Sunshine State. My artistic journey is a tale of legacy. It began when I was just a child, spending my summers in Vancouver with my beloved Nana Flora.
Nana was an artist herself, and she introduced me to many forms of art, but at age 10, she introduced me to calligraphy. It quickly became our shared language. We would spend hours practicing, and even when we were apart, we used our letters to each other to refine our scripts.
She taught me that handwriting wasn’t just about communication it was about the human touch. This childhood fascination became a lifelong craft, and 18 years ago, that passion officially became my purpose.

Launching in the Florida Market
Transitioning from a hobbyist to a professional in Florida required a strategic understanding of the local landscape. Florida is unique it’s a global hub for weddings, high-end retail, and corporate hospitality.
1. Identifying the Luxury Niche
Early on, I realized that to stand out, I couldn’t just be a “service provider”; I had to be an experience creator. I focused on the luxury market, serving Florida brides and world-renowned brands who value authenticity and tradition.
If you’re planning a Florida wedding, you might enjoy my article on Live Calligrapher Wedding Costs in Florida for insights on pricing, value, and event impact.
2. Expanding the Toolset: Engraving & Foiling
While traditional ink-and-paper calligraphy was my first love, building a sustainable business in Miami and Palm Beach meant diversifying. I invested thousands of hours into mastering hand engraving and metallic foiling.
Hand Engraving: Using a portable diamond-tipped drill allowed me to enter the world of wine and perfume personalization.
For new artists, my Beginner’s Guide to Hand Engraving Tools covers the exact tools and materials I use at luxury events.
Foiling: This opened doors to luxury leather goods—initialing luggage tags for jet-setters or portfolios for corporate executives.
You can read more about the difference between engraving and foiling in my article, Glass Engraving vs. Hot Foiling for Events.
Major Milestones: From Local Events to Celebrity Clients
Building a business is about building trust. Over the last 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of working at some of Florida’s most prestigious venues from The Breakers in Palm Beach to luxury hotels in South Beach.
The “Baccarat” Experience
One of my most cherished recurring partnerships is with Baccarat. I’ve returned to their boutiques multiple times, notably for Mother’s Day events. Seeing a guest’s face light up as I engrave “I love you” in their native tongue on a crystal bottle is the ultimate reward.
This kind of live brand activation demonstrates how artistry elevates the guest experience. For luxury brands seeking ideas, see my Live Event Activations Guide for creative inspiration.
Global Brand Activations
Working with Giorgio Armani for their Spring/Summer 2025 collection launch was a testament to the power of live artistry. These brands don’t just hire a calligrapher; they hire a brand ambassador who can engage VIP guests while delivering flawless precision.

The Business Side: Pricing and Operations
Many aspiring artists ask me how to turn calligraphy into a business. It requires a balance of art and logistics.
1. Transparent Pricing
I believe in being open about calligraphy costs in Florida. For a business to thrive, you must price for the value you provide.
- Live Event Rates: Typically range from $200–$500 per hour.
- In-Studio Work: Pricing is often per unit or per word, reflecting the meticulous nature of the craft.
I’ve written extensively about this in my Live Calligraphy Pricing Guide to help clients and artists understand what goes into these services.
2. Overcoming Burnout
The life of an entrepreneur is demanding. Scaling a business while maintaining high-quality hand lettering can be exhausting. I had to learn the art of beating burnout to stay creative and energized for my clients.
Taking part in workshops or retreats helps renew creative energy. Explore my article on In-Person vs. Online Calligraphy Courses for training options that fit your lifestyle.
Giving Back: Mentorship and Workshops
Just as Nana Flora mentored me, I now pay it forward. I host calligraphy workshops in Florida and offer private lessons. My goal is to foster a new generation of artists who understand that good instruction is the key to mastery.
If you’d like to experience this firsthand, explore our Live Calligraphy Workshops to learn more about how these sessions work.
Frequently Asked Questions (The Psychology of Growth)
Networking and consistency. I started by doing small Florida weddings and working with event planners. In the luxury world, word-of-mouth is your strongest marketing tool.
It takes a lot of practice. The process from ink to envelope differs from drill-to-glass. I recommend starting with pen calligraphy before moving to engraving see my Hand Engraving vs. Machine Personalization Comparison for insights.
There’s an unforgettable energy to live events. Watching a guest’s eyes widen as I write their name is far more fulfilling than working in isolation. Learn more about what makes live brand events so powerful in our Luxury Event Activation Ideas.
Yes! I’m a mobile artist. I travel from Miami to Jacksonville for events. The “studio” is wherever my pen (or drill) is.
